Churchill Downs will host the 2024 Kentucky Derby on May 4, 2024 with a new purse of $5 million dollars!!! The first leg of the Triple Crown will award the winner $3.1 million of that purse. that is a 67% increase for the 1 1/4 race, that takes place every first Saturday in May. It is THE race of the year for three year old’s in the United States. Millions of people tune in for the “Greatest two minutes of sports!”
Second place will receive $1 million, with third getting $500,000, fourth with $250,000 and $150,000 to fifth. The purse has grown through the years, with $3 million in 2019, $2 million from 2005-2018 and $1 million from 1996-2004.
The Preakness will take place two weeks later at Pimlico in Baltimore, and the third leg, The Belmont Stakes, will be moved from Belmont Park to Saratoga Racecourse.
So as the Kentucky Derby comes closer, you should start planning your party! Of course you will need Derby Hats for the ladies, and a snazzy outfit for your man!!
